Milpa Cooking Class: Elote Season | Free with RSVP (SOLD OUT)

We kick off the summer series cooking up all things from our Urban Milpa. In this first class, we will feature elotes/sweet corn. Participants will get to prepare some delicious Uchepos (sweet corn tamales) customary during this time of the season. We will also explore water's importance in traditional agriculture, particularly in relation to elote traditions to demonstrate the rich cultural heritage tied to these milpa foods. Additionally, we will review the fundamental principles of water, where it comes from, and determine if the plants are receiving too much or too little water during the hot dry summer season and discuss drought tolerant irrigation strategies, emphasizing sustainable practices. Special guest, Marlene Aguilar of Irekuarhikua.

Marlene Aguilar
A Xicana and of P’urhepecha descent, born and raised in Tongva territory (in what is now known as East Los Angeles, CA) with roots in the inter-mountain valley region of Michoacán, Mexico. As a community-based cocinera, she draws inspiration from her campesin@ family but has also been shaped by her work in different food equity programs, specifically CSAs (community supported agriculture). She is founder of the food project, IREKUARHIKUA, which aims to offer seasonally inspired affordable plant-based meals while highlighting the resilience of indigenous foods. Her project is currently offering a meal prep service like comida corrida from fondas or cocinas económicas found throughout Mexico.
